The Ego Masquerading as "Nice"
08.04.25
The ego can be challenging to identify, when the words spoken and actions performed appear (superficially) to be nice, positive and supportive.
Below are examples of "nice" phrases - that are not nice at all - in that they actively encourage identification with experience (thoughts, actions, emotions, words etc) - and a state of separateness and seriousness. Within/beneath/through the words is defensiveness, passive aggressiveness, judgement and ignorance.
- Emotions are beautiful
- Needs are important, and should be expressed and met
- You are amazing
- You are perfect as you are
- You are so brave
- It is okay to feel how you feel
- You have the right to feel how you feel
- Everyone is different, and that's okay
- Everyone is on their own path, and that's okay
- We all express love in different ways
- Everyone's perspective is valid and equal
- I have my truth and you have yours
- We are equals
- You deserve to be heard/listened to
- Your voice matters
- You matter
- You are special
- This is a safe and non-judgemental space
- Thank you for sharing/being vulnerable
- Permission should be asked/given before observations are shared
- It is important to respect each other's wishes
The ego is hidden in plain sight. With experience and exploration, we come to know it, experientially.
