Cravings

It appears that cravings are physical sensations that can be experienced without suffering.
There is first a sensation in the body. Then, almost immediately after the sensation arrives, the mind labels the sensation (hunger, nicotine withdrawal, sexual desire etc) and seeks to satisfy it (with food, nicotine, sex etc). It happens (for most of us) so quickly - the jump from "being aware" to "thinking" - that we often don't notice what is happening.
When a sensation ("craving") arrives, there is exists  the opportunity to be aware of it, not label it and not "do" anything about it. This doesn't involve any willpower / resistance, and is a peaceful experience.
When Alex and I have tried this (me with hunger, Alex with hunger and nicotine), we notice that the "craving" passes within seconds - and the next time it arrives, it has less "pull". The "craving" is no longer in control.
It can be helpful to know that "being aware" is an option available, when / if fulfilling a "craving" is not wanted / practically possible.
